Albert Einstein's formula "E=mc2" means energy equals the mass of an object multiplied by the speed of light squared. His theory means that the mass of an object, no matter how small, can be transformed into a tremendous amount of energy. Einstein's equation E = mc2 shows that energy and mass are interchangeable. (Image credit: Nikitina Olga/Shutterstock) The theory of special relativity explains how space and time are linked for It may be noted that Einstein did not actually formulate exactly the formula E = mc2 in his paper. He even did not use the term E for energy, he used term L instead.

You are right, the formula E = m x c^2 is deduced from Newtons formula, but Einstein explained many things, Newton couldn't explain. Albert Einstein published his Special Theory of Relativity in 1905 and in doing so demonstrated that mass and energy are actually the same thing, with one a tightly compressed manifestation of the other. This mass-energy equivalence has had a major impact on all our lives, although how and why isn't always obvious. It may be noted that Einstein did not actually formulate exactly the formula E = mc2 in his paper. He even did not use the term E for energy, he used term L instead. In the paper he stated that if a body gives off the energy L in the form of radiation, its mass diminishes by L/c2 and that the mass of a body represents its energy content. Without doubt E = mc 2 is the world’s most famous equation. This page explains what E = mc 2 means in simple terms and some of its consequences.

and their apparent incompatibility; an explanation of Einstein's relativity resolves this problem, and some consequences of relativity, including E=mc2.
