The only naturally occurring isotope of thorium is 232 Th and it is unstable and radioactive. According to Adams and Gasparini (1970) thorium is chemically stable in the tetravalent ion state under reducing conditions, has a large ionic radii, a high coordination number (8) with respect to oxygen, and complete outermost electron shells. As Thorium-234 undergoes beta decay, a neutron becomes a proton. The atomic number goes up one as the new element has an additional proton. The atomic mass stays the same as the new element has the same number of nucleons.

It can be used to determine 220 Rn, and also its parent, 232 Th. Thorium is determined by comparison with a standard, but because of the short half-life of 220 Rn, decay correction must be made. 2 Using an emanation electroscope, we observe the radioactive decay of thoron (separated from all its parent substances) by the progressive decrease of ionization in the air around the thoron. How it works: We use thorium (in thorium oxide) to generate thoron. The sequence of decays is known as the Thorium-232 series and goes as follows: The thorium series is one of three classical radioactive series beginning with naturally occurring thorium-232.This radioactive decay chain consists of unstable heavy atomic nuclei that decay through a sequence of alpha and beta decays until a stable nucleus is achieved. For example, pure thorium-232 is weakly radioactive (proportional to its long half-life), but a thorium ore is about 10 times more radioactive than the pure thorium-232 metal because of its daughter isotopes (e.g. radon, radium etc.) it contains. 232 Th is the predominant isotope of natural thorium.

233 Th decays (negative beta decay) to 233 Pa (protactinium), whose half-life is 26.97 days. Thorium 232. The Th232 Gamma Spectrum, has many peaks stretching out to 2.6 MeV, and it can be tricky to identify the correct peaks. Detectors smaller than 2" x 2" may have difficulty seeing the higher end gammas, which means you are only seeingt part of the spectrum. The following spectrum was recorded with a 3" NaI (Tl) detector with GS-1100-PRO 2011-05-16 · Thorium-232 undergoes radioactive decay until a stable isotope is reached. Thorium 232 decay

The decay process continues until a stable, nonradioactive decay product is formed. In addition to thorium-232, thorium-228 is present naturally in background. Thorium-228 is a decay product of The most stable isotope, 232 Th, has a half-life of 14.05 billion years, or about the age of the universe; it decays very slowly via alpha decay, starting a decay chain named the thorium series that ends at stable 208 Pb. The slow decay of 235 U, 238 U, and 232 Th occurs through a long and complicated series of radioactive elements until they finally become stable lead isotopes.

If this fertile material is loaded in the nuclear reactor, the nuclei of 232 Th absorb a neutron and become nuclei of 233 Th. The half-life of 233 Th is approximately 21.8 minutes.

If the radioactive decay of Thorium- (232 The alpha decay of 232 Th initiates the 4n decay chain which includes isotopes with a mass number divisible by 4 (hence the name; it is also called the thorium series after its progenitor). This chain of consecutive alpha and beta decays begins with the decay of 232 Th to 228 Ra and terminates at 208 Pb. 2016-03-11 · Thorium-232 ( 232 Th) is present in significant amounts in the Earth's crust and is an alpha-emitting radionuclide, which decays to radium-228 ( 228 Ra), which is a beta emitter with a half-life of about six years; it emits no significant gamma radiation.
