Vasily Vasilievich Konovalenko Vasily Vasilievich Konovalenko was born in 1929 in Petrovka – a village in the Zaporozhye region of Ukraine. His father, Vasily Konovalenko, was Ukrainian and his mother, Feodosia Galiguzova, was Russian. Vasily was a fifth child in the family and the only boy. “The exhibition "Vasily Konovalenko: A Sculptor of Gems" is a display of the sublime heritage of Russian stone carving – a craft that Russians have always held in high esteem. Vasily Konovalenko was called ‘Danila the Craftsman’ as the successor of eminent craftsmen of the Urals and heir to the traditions of Fabergé,” he said. Over the span of about four decades, the late Russian artist Vasily Konovalenko (1929–1989) produced more than 70 wonderful gem-carving sculptures that depict themes and scenes of Russian folk life. Vasily Konovalenko was a Ukrainian-born (self-identified as Russian) sculptor who was the creator of unique miniatures in the genre of gem- and mineral-cutting.

Vasily Konovalenko worked at the former Kirovsky, currently Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, where he created opera and ballet scenery. He later turned to stone carving, inspired by Sergei Prokofiev’s ballet “The Stone Flower”.
