Vasily Vasilievich Konovalenko Vasily Vasilievich Konovalenko was born in 1929 in Petrovka – a village in the Zaporozhye region of Ukraine. His father, Vasily Konovalenko, was Ukrainian and his mother, Feodosia Galiguzova, was Russian. Over the span of about four decades, the late Russian artist Vasily Konovalenko (1929–1989) produced more than 70 wonderful gem-carving sculptures that depict themes and scenes of Russian folk life. Vasily Konovalenko was a Ukrainian-born (self-identified as Russian) sculptor who was the creator of unique miniatures in the genre of gem- and mineral-cutting.

Vasily Konovalenko worked at the former Kirovsky, currently Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, where he created opera and ballet scenery. He later turned to stone carving, inspired by Sergei Prokofiev’s ballet “The Stone Flower”.
